Candela
Candela has been described as "A dynamite jazz group that successfully incorporates the shakuhachi and combines the best of Latin, European and Japanese traditions." (Reese Erlich, Jazz Perspectives, KCSM San Francisco.)

Candela is a Tokyo-based quintet devoted to performing fresh and melodic jazz-based music that reflects the years its members have spent studying other musical traditions, including Latin, Indian, Western classical and Japanese.
Candela's sound explores such unusual instruments as French horn, bass clarinet, shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), tabla (North Indian drums), and bowed double bass.

Candela began as a Latin jazz group featuring Bruce's flute, Jonathan's piano and Robbie Belgrade's percussion and sax. Gradually, the shakuhachi, bass clarinet and French horn were added, and audiences responded enthusiastically. The band has gone on to create new compositions and arrangements that probe the untapped musical possibilities of these instruments, which have become central to a vibrant tone palette and compositional style that is uniquely "Candela."

Many people ask, "Why play jazz with shakuhachi or French horn?" or "Isn't it difficult to fit shakuhachi with western instruments?" Instruments like French horn or shakuhachi that are not commonly found in jazz inspire players to create a new vocabulary to express themselves. This process is after all the essence of jazz music.
