The first non-Japanese to graduate in Japanese Music Performance from the prestigious Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music,
where he studied under Living National Treasure Goro Yamaguchi.
In 1995 and 1996, Bruce produced two well-received solo shakuhachi recitals that featured traditional music from the Edo Period (1604 to 1864),
and in 1998 he released three best-selling English-language shakuhachi instructional videos.
In 2000, he led an American tour of Japanese chamber music co-sponsored by the Japan Foundation.
The group performed at universities and festivals in Virginia, Ohio, California and Colorado.
He also teaches shakuhachi in Tokyo and at Fukushima Medical University. |
